In Romania, 1 in 3 women over the age of 16 is a victim of domestic violence. The road to a peaceful life does not end with leaving the abusive relationships.

After leaving such relationships, many women face social isolation, feelings of loneliness (“I don’t know anyone who has experienced this”), lack of self-confidence, fear of developing new friendships, and a tendency to avoid relationships or repeat the pattern of abusive relationships. A.L.E.G. (www.aleg-romania.eu) and local partner associations provide free psychological counseling services and access to support groups to women in several areas of the country, all with the aim of helping any woman take steps towards emotional autonomy and a peaceful life. Why join a support group?

You get emotional support and can be part of a community. A support group provides an environment where you can share your experiences with people who have been through similar situations. Here you will find understanding, empathy, and emotional support from other participants.

It is a place where you feel understood and accepted, an essential space for healing. In a support group, you will discover that you are not alone in your experiences and that there are people who support you and encourage you to move forward.

You regain confidence in your own strengths. Group discussions and activities are designed to help you recognize and leverage your inner resources, thus contributing to strengthening self-esteem.

You learn about emotions and how to manage them. Participating in the group helps you manage difficult emotions and overcome feelings of fear, shame, and helplessness. You will learn techniques and strategies to cope with trauma and move forward with courage and determination.

Develop healthy relationships. You will learn how to build and maintain friendships and relationships that support and fulfill you.

You will receive resources and information that will help you in the healing process. You will learn about your rights, ways to protect yourself, and support services available in your community.

Support groups provide a safe and confidential environment where you can talk openly without fear of judgment or exposure. Confidentiality is a core principle of these groups, and we ensure through written agreements that everything discussed remains between participants. The exact location of the meeting will only be communicated after registration to ensure a protected and quiet environment.

What to expect?
The meetings take place in a calm and unique environment, where confidentiality is strictly respected. An average of 8-10 people participate in the group meetings. Each group meeting follows a specific theme, previously agreed with the participants. The meetings take place monthly and last a maximum of two hours. Between meetings we keep in touch on the WhatsApp group. The sessions are coordinated by a team of experienced psychologists and psychotherapists.

Here are some topics we address in the group: Knowledge and (self)knowledge in relationships – what to do before entering a relationship, when we are in a relationship, when we leave a relationship; Increasing self-confidence; Portrait of a person who is in an unhealthy relationship, who has freed himself from this relationship, who helps; Strengthening current social relationships; Me vs. the other – activities that encourage relational autonomy; Commitment to self-care; Steps towards healthy relationships; Steps towards financial security; My mask – what I hide under it, what I let be seen, how I feel in both situations, etc.
